Affordable homes plan for derelict sites in Wolverhampton
Almost 30 new homes could be built on derelict land across Wolverhampton if plans are approved.
Wolverhampton Council is looking to continue a scheme that has been in operation for seven years in which unused sites are redeveloped to provide affordable housing for residents.
Applications for three different sites have been submitted to the authority’s planning department and are currently under consideration.
Among them is the old Bilston Lawn Tennis Club which closed four years ago and has been vacant since. The proposal there is to create 10 two-bedroom properties at the site, which sits on Villiers Avenue and Harper Road.
A second location identified is on the former Dale House older persons residential home, which has been closed for over a decade.
The proposal is for nine two-bedroom properties, which will have wheelchair access, to be constructed on the land, which sits on the junction of Showell Circus and Hendon Close.
And the third site identified is land on the corner of Ettingshall Road And Sweetbriar Road where seven two-bedroom and two four-bedroom properties are being put forward.
The site has lain empty for some time and historically featured Victorian terraced housing.
A spokesman for Wolverhampton Council spokesman said if the plans are approved, the new houses would be made available for affordable rent.
He said: "The submission of planning applications is another major step in bringing these three vacant sites back into use while helping us meet increasing housing demand in the city.
"This is part of a programme the council has been running since 2013 to build on small derelict unused sites, helping smarten up neighbourhoods in the city while providing affordable housing to residents in need.
"One of our key priorities is to increase the number of decent, high quality affordable homes available in the city. The tenants in these properties will definitely benefit from that, access to local amenities and a garden space."
