The city was placed 24th in the table nationally and fourth for the West Midlands.

The rankings use the most up-to-date data on income, employment, education, health and crime, as well as housing services and the environment, to assess more than 32,800 small areas or neighbourhoods across England.

Government officials ranked each council from one to 317, with low numbers indicating higher levels of deprivation.

Compared to other areas in the Black Country, Wolverhampton is more deprived than its neighbouring towns.

Dudley came eighth on the list, Walsall was fifth, and Cannock was thirteenth.

Sandwell, however, was near the top as the second most deprived areas of the West Midlands.
