Work to demolish a former Wolverhampton city centre nightclub is gathering pace.

The nightclub will be brought down over the next few weeks

The old Faces club, on the corner of Garrick Street and Bilston Street, is being brought down to make way for a new multi-million pound learning quarter.

Changing Faces: the nightclub will soon be a thing of the past

Scaffolding has been put up around the venue looking out onto Garrick Street and initial demolition works have begun.

Commuters and shoppers will gradually see the well-known building brought to the ground over the coming weeks.

Bulldozing the nightclub presents a challenge for workers as the busy city centre roads running past it are being kept open. Some pavements have been sealed off to protect the public.

Diggers have been getting to work

The Faces site will be transformed to become the new centre for further education in Wolverhampton, one of several major developments earmarked for the city over the next few years.

The move will see the college leave its long-standing base at Paget Road, with education chiefs keen for a move to the city centre to make it a more attractive proposition for students.

Vacant buildings owned by the council on St George’s Parade will also be pulled down as part of the Learning Quarter project.

The old nightclub was also known as Oceania and Atlantis in years gone by and was popular with revellers for decades.
