Wolverhampton's outdoor pools still closed as summer heat starts

Open-air pools in Wolverhampton remain out of action as the summer finally heats up – with one to stay closed until next year.

With temperatures soaring, families would have been expected to flock to pools in East Park and Tettenhall to cool off but delayed repair works mean both are empty of water and deserted.

Council bosses have now confirmed Tettenhall Pool will not re-open until August 1, while the pool at East Park will stay shut until next year.

It will mean disappointment for families who were hoping to enjoy fun in the sun this week as temperatures finally pick up.

Repairs to Tettenhall Pool were delayed and only started in May, meaning it could not be opened for the spring bank holidays.

The sun has been shining on West Park in Wolverhampton this week

It came after there was a public consultation about whether or not people wanted to see the pool repaired in Tettenhall at all.

Meanwhile chiefs have also encountered problems at East Park, where the work has turned out to be more complicated than expected.

Both pools in Wolverhampton have been closed since last September.

A council spokeswoman said: “Due to the complexity of the underground plant work on East Park pool, we are working on plans with a view to the pool being reopened next year.

“We are pleased works on Tettenhall Pool are on track and hope the warmer weather continues for you to enjoy the grand reopening on August 1.

"We strongly encourage you to continue to visit both Tettenhall Upper Green and East Park as they are both beautiful green spaces for you to enjoy, especially over the summer months.

“For those looking to cool off, we hope you take advantage of our indoor swimming pools our city has to offer.”

The city’s opposition leader Wendy Thompson has hit out at the closures, especially as the summer finally takes a turn for the better.

She said: “This is absolutely awful for children. We don’t get that many sunny days and when we do it is great to see the children really enjoying the two pools.”
