Braybrook Centre, a Key Stage 3 Pupil Referral Unit, was praised for having a "climate of support, trust, achievement and respect" by an Ofsted inspector.

The school on Lawnswood Avenue teaches up to 42 youngsters who have social, emotional or mental health difficulties.

The majority of the pupils at the school have been excluded from a mainstream school, or have been referred as they are at a risk of exclusion.

Inspector Michael Cladingbowl visited the school on March 26 and found pupils attendance is "good and improving" – although a few pupils still have poor attendance.

The report read: "Overall, pupils make good progress during their time at school. They develop confidence and make a positive contribution to the school community.

"They learn to adjust their behaviour so that it is more acceptable.

"They usually work hard in lessons and respond well to teachers and other staff.

"Consequently, they usually learn and achieve well."

The report also found not all teachers structure learning, with some pupils finding it "difficult" to remember what they've learned.

Other areas of the school were complimented in the report, which also found it had maintained a "good quality" of education.

Centre head Stuart Playford and executive headteacher Jo Wood were also praised by the report.

The school is part of the Lawnswood Campus, a group of three council-maintained pupil referral units in the city.

Councillor Michael Hardacre, Wolverhampton Council's cabinet member for education and skills, added: "This is a very positive report which paints a picture of a Pupil Referral Unit which is working very well for its students.

“I would like to thank Stuart Playford, Jo Wood and their team for all their hard work and look forward to the Braybrook Centre going from strength to strength."
