Police shut the Wolverhampton route at the junction of Parkfield Road and Thompson Avenue after the crash just after 4.30pm today.

Wolverhampton Police tweeted saying: "TRAFFIC: We're currently at the scene of a serious collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Birmingham new Road, Wolverhampton.

"The road is closed at the junction of Parkfield Road.

"Please avoid the area where possible."

The road reopened at around 6.30pm.

One resident, who lives on Thompson Avenue, said: “I didn’t see it happen but all the emergency services were here when I got home. The road was all shut off and there were police, ambulances and the helicopter came.

“It is such a busy road as it’s a main road from Wolverhampton. There’s usually small crashes every month, but this seems quite serious.”

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, added: “There were emergency services everywhere. It seemed quite serious and so close to where those two young boys died recently.”

Alicia Freeman, who lives on Thompson Avenue, opposite where the crash took place, said: “The first we heard about was when they started closing all the road off and the sirens. Apparently a girl was knocked down by a car, as far as I know she was a pedestrian.

“All the road was closed off and police put blue tape across the roads. The helicopter landed over the back somewhere. There were ambulances, police and fire engines here.

“It’s so close to where the two boys died recently, it’s terrible.”

A Parkfield Road resident said: “I didn’t see what had happened as I had been on a night shift but there was quite a serious accident here, there were ambulances and police cars here.

“A young girl was involved I believe, possibly around 13/14-years-old.

“The cordon was not long lifted, at about 6.20pm – but it was going on over two hours.

“This junction is really bad – there are so many accidents here. Hopefully the council can look at doing something about it because it’s getting quite bad.”
