The city council has been approached about the possibility of creating new play facilities at Upper Green.

A parents' group say they would be prepared to raise money for the project themselves and have been backed by Wolverhampton MP Eleanor Smith.

Land next to Tettenhall Pool has been earmarked for the playground. The parents are keen to ease any concerns about the plans and say the playground would be in keeping with the surrounding area.

They also confirmed the facilities would be in addition to the iconic paddling pool after residents recently overwhelmingly chose to keep it in favour of new gym equipment.

Tettenhall Pool is expected to re-open some time during this summer following repair works but a firm date has not been set.

Mother-of-two Amanda Alsop, who is leading the campaign, said: "It's great that we have the paddling pool but we only use that when it's nice weather. This is something we can use all year round.

"For a village like Tettenhall it seems quite odd that we don't have a playground when there are a lot of families and children in the area.

"We want something that is in keeping with the area and sympathetic to its surroundings. We share the view that it is a beautiful area and we want something that will enhance the area. We are thinking something with natural materials, not concreting it over.

"The first thing we want to do is check if there is interest in the local community. We set up a petition and have had more than 300 signatures."

The potential loss of Tettenhall Pool sparked anger in the area last year. Council bosses later confirmed the pool would remain and undergo repairs.

Eleanor Smith, MP for Wolverhampton South West, said she supported the playground plan.

She said: "Let’s get a playground on Upper Green to make this an even more fabulous family-friendly place. I am supporting the grassroots organisation of local parents in their plans for this."
