Bags of rubbish and cardboard boxes have been left next to waste banks at Sainsbury's in Wolverhampton, which have become a dumping ground.

However, most of what has been left is either too big or not suitable for the banks, on the car park at the supermarket on St Mark's Ring Road.

The banks allow shoppers to dispose of bottles, clothes and newspapers but are not designed to take general household waste and larger items.

It has left irritated store bosses having to arrange for the rubbish to be cleared, while there are also concerns the build up of rubbish could have a negative impact on the shop.

Store manager Mark Hankin said: "We get a lot of fly-tipping. We clear what we can within our group of contracted cleaners and then we have to organise for specialists to come in.

"We have periods of the year where it can be a problem, at Christmas people turn up. On rare occasions, for whatever reason, there is a spate of it. We normally have it under control."

Mr Hankin said some people leaving rubbish might not be aware of what can and can be left at the banks.

He said: "Certainly some people do it in good faith but there are also people who don't want the expense of having something picked up.

"We clear it every day but if there is a particularly large amount we can't deal with, we have to book a collection."

Mr Hankin added: "It can appear to people that it is neglect but that is not the case at all."
