The 2018 Vaisakhi parade through Wolverhampton and West Park celebrations

Roads across the city were temporarily closed as the Vaisakhi parade made its way from the Guru Nanak Satsang Gurdwara on Cannock Road to West Park.

The procession started at 9am and snaked through the city centre in glorious sunshine before arriving at the park at 1pm.

The park was expected to be packed for the annual celebration, where famous Asian musicians and singers are part of the family-friendly entertainment.

The Council of Sikh Gurdwaras in Wolverhampton, together with the Asian community, is holding the popular festival from 10am until 5pm.

A fun fair is in the park, while free food will be served throughout the day as religious leaders make speeches and local organisations showcase their services.

There have already been parades in Walsall, Wolverhampton and Smethwick this year to celebrate Vaisakhi, or the Sikh New Year festival.

Wolverhampton council said today's road closures would affect the Bushbury, South and Low Hill, Heath Town, St Peter's, Blakenhall, Graiseley, and Park wards, and will run from 9am until 1pm .

West Park will again be packed tomorrow for Wolves' promotion celebrations. Find out more about the parade, party and road closures here.
