The crash happened on Bilston Street, outside Wolverhampton police station

The 72-year-old was crossing Bilston Street, outside the police station in Wolverhampton, when he was struck by a Vauxhall Corsa at 11pm.

He went to hospital as a precaution, believing he had only suffered minor concussion, but his condition deteriorated significantly overnight and he was put in an induced coma.

The pensioner is now in a critical condition having suffered a brain injury and medics are 'extremely concerned', West Midlands Police said.

The driver of the Corsa stopped at the scene, provided a negative breath test and was allowed to leave after providing officers with details.

Traffic sergeant Ade Brown, said: "This initially appeared to be a low-impact collision.

"The pedestrian was walking wounded with minor abrasions to his head and it was believed the pedestrian had suffered concussion from the impact.

"However, doctors say the pedestrian has suffered a serious brain injury and been placed in an induced coma.

"We would like to hear from anyone who was in Bilston Street last night and may have witnessed the collision to get in touch − we need to understand exactly what happened and their information could be important."
