City crews were called to a home in Skidmore Avenue in the Bradmore area at about 5.10am yesterday morning after reports of a fire.

It had started in one of the bedrooms at the back of the house, but chiefs are not sure of the cause at this stage.

Everyone in the house had evacuated once fire engines arrived, with a total of eight firefighters on hand to battle the flames.

But crew members were quickly alerted to the family hamster, who had been left inside.

The little animal was rescued and firefighters used pet oxygen equipment, called Smokey Paws, to resuscitate it.

Wolverhampton Police sent a message out on Twitter sharing the news the hamster had been rescued.

Officers said: “Green Watch attended a bedroom fire this morning, all occupants are safe and well.

“One Hamster was rescued and revived at the scene by crews using pet oxygen therapy equipment."

They also joked that they had renamed the hamster Winter Soldier, after the popular Marvel superhero character.

Pictures released by Wolverhampton Fire show the blackened state the bedroom was left in after it had been put out.

West Midlands Ambulance Service also sent one ambulance to the home at 5.47am.

Paramedics treated a woman for minor smoke inhalation but said she was able to be discharged at the scene and did not have to visit hospital.

The hamster was confirmed to be safe and well following the fire.
