Pensioner victim of fatal Stafford Road crash named as Hopton Gayle

A pensioner who died after being hit by a car which failed to stop in Wolverhampton has been named as Hopton Gayle.

The 80-year-old suffered serious injuries following the collision in Stafford Road, near the Goodyear Island, just before 6.10pm on Monday.

Nothing could be done to save the life of Mr Gayle, from Wolverhampton, and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

A 19-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been released under investigation pending further inquiries.

Sergeant Alan Hands, from West Midlands Police’s collision investigation unit, said: "Our sympathies are with the family of Mr Gayle at this very difficult time and we have specialist officers giving them support.

"We are still working to establish the circumstances of the collision and would ask anyone who hasn't spoken to officers already to get in touch."
