The 2018 Carver Wolverhampton Half Marathon will take place on Sunday, September 2, it was announced at a launch event in the city’s art gallery this week.

Kicking off the launch, deputy mayor of Wolverhampton Councillor Phil Page said he was delighted to announce the event would be returning for another “tremendous” year.

He said: “This event is a wonderful occasion for everyone involved. It enhances Wolverhampton’s image, and we should do anything we can do to improve that.”

This is the first year that the city will not see a full marathon taking place, as numbers were reported to be considerably low in 2017.

Organiser Mary Harding said: “The numbers were falling on the marathon, it was taking people so long to do the second lap that a lot of people were running the first lap and walking the second.

“And we have to look at our volunteers giving up their time on the weekend. They start early in the morning and you can never guarantee the weather, so we took the decision to focus on the core events this year.”

Entrants will be able to choose from the 13.2 mile half marathon, a 10K run, a variety of cycle events, or a ‘walk in the park’. There is also a ‘mini marathon’ for under-14s.

The event chooses three charities to support each year and for 2018 organisers have gone with Compton Hospice, Give Us A Break Wolverhampton, and Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club.
