Although the pipe was still being repaired this afternoon, the supply in Perton has returned after the leak meant taps were dry in the WV6 area for around seven hours.

Severn Trent was called to the burst 12-inch pipe at the junction of Stephenson Drive and The Parkway, at 4.30am, where the road was flooded.

Workers attended to the leak, first attempting to seal off the main to bring back supply to the area.

However, homes supplied directly from the pipe continued to be affected until shortly after 11am, when their supply was returned by the company moving water around the affected pipe.

Severn Trent spokesman Jonathan Smith said the firm had received around 150 calls from customers without water.

Meanwhile Perton Primary Academy announced it was to close today after losing its supply.

Other schools were unaffected:

A statement from Severn Trent released after the supply was resolved warned of the potential for further minor disruption.

"We're happy to confirm that everyone affected by the burst pipe in Stephenson Drive in Perton is now back on supply," the statement said.

"We've got everyone back on by moving water around our network in a different way and we're now able to get on with fixing the pipe that burst in the early hours of this morning.

"We'd like to say sorry to everyone who was affected but our teams worked hard to get everything back to normal as quickly as possible.

"There might be a bit of disruption as we'll have to dig down to the pipe to do a permanent fix, and we'd like to apologise in advance for this but it's really good news that people in Perton have got their water back."
