The Great Western on Sun Street, Wolverhampton, came in first place with The Swan at Compton who also managed to claim top spot.

Members of CAMRA awarded proprietor Jamie Atkins with a plaque on Thursday night to celebrate The Great Western winning Mild Pub of the Year.

Mr Atkins, 60, who has been at the pub for 9 years, said: “It’s nice to be recognised. We've won city pub of the year and now we've won mild pub of the year.

“They couldn't choose between us and the Swan at Compton, so the two of us have got Mild Pub of the Year.

“For some reason people don’t like to stock it now because there isn't a call for mild, however we seem to be bucking the trend because we've always got mild on, and we always stock the full Holden's range.

“I’ve had the pub nine years and I think since the pub was purchased by Holdens back in 1987 it’s always stocked the full range because they’re good brews.”

The pub hopes to maintain its impressive track record, having previously claimed the CAMRA Pub of the Year award back in 1991.
