Developers have submitted a proposal to Walsall Council to build a new complex featuring 25 flats on Aston Road, where the old Windmill Inn once stood.

The pub has been closed for more than a decade and was finally demolished after permission was granted in 2013. The site has been vacant ever since.

There have been previous applications for housing developments, including the building of a care home there, but these failed to come to fruition.

In the application, planning agents IDP said the proposed development would improve both the empty site and the wider area.

They said: “Following demolition of the public house the site has remained vacant and open.

“The site has good public transport links, with the bus route running along Aston Road, providing potential residents with viable alternatives to private car ownership.

“To the north west of the site is Willenhall Memorial Park which provides Public Open Space within close proximity to the site.

“The district centre of Willenhall lies to the east and offers a wide variety of shops and services within easy reach. Healthcare facilities and schools are also accessible within the local area.

“Development of the site provides an opportunity to create high quality residential dwellings with associated landscaping on a well located brownfield site.

“There is an opportunity to enhance local distinctiveness, with a development that reflects and reinforces architecture of the local vernacular.

“There is an opportunity to create an appropriate frontage and corner feature onto Aston Road and Webb Street.

“Clearing the site will improve the local environment and the creation of a new residential development will enhance the local area."
