The 19-year-old man was one of three passengers in a Seat Leon which crashed into a parked car with a family inside in Pelsall Lane, Rushall, at around 9pm on Friday evening.

Nurses who live nearby rushed out to help but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other six people involved in the crash were taken to hospital, including three who were seriously hurt.

Three other young men in the Leon were among the injured.

The 19-year-old driver remained in a serious but stable condition on Saturday but the two surviving passengers, aged 20 and 21, were discharged and arrested on suspicion of possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

The man and woman who were in the parked Chevrolet Trax with their daughter were still in hospital on Saturday, with their condition also described as stable by police.

Their nine-year-old daughter was taken to hospital but was less seriously injured and has been discharged.

A stretch of the road was closed between Scholars Lane and the entrance to Aristocats Luxury Cattery for several hours in the aftermath of the crash.

Numerous police cars and paramedics were sent to the scene along with two fire crews from Walsall.

Edwin Venables, chairman of the nearby Neighbourhood Watch group, lives on Pelsall Lane and heard the crash happen.

"We just heard a big bang, like it was a lorry or something similar, and came out to find a car at an angle in the wall of next door," he said.

"There was a lady in there with her father or an elderly person driving and a baby, and he was injured, but not too badly and they were just a bit shaken up.

"There was also a car which had disintegrated, coming from the other way, with the engine just a bit further up the road, and all of the side of the car was down the side of the road, and the other was another 20 yards down the road.

"It was just carnage, absolute carnage, and I just stood on the traffic island asking the oncoming traffic to slow down with my torch before about four ambulances, three fire engines and dozens of police cars arrived.

"We're all shocked, but unfortunately, we're getting used to it because we've seen other incidents and accidents around here. I just feel for the family of the person who died."

Another resident, who didn't want to be named, explained how off-duty nurses rushed to help before the emergency services took over.

"I heard an almighty bang," they said.

"I came running out to see debris and carnage everywhere and it left me in a state of shock as you don't expect to see something like this on your street.

"A few of us came out of our houses to do what we could, with there being two nurses in the houses, then the police and fire crews arrived and took over."

The road was back open on Saturday morning, with the damaged wall, markings on the road and police tape the only remaining evidence of where the crash took place.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "We have spoken to several witnesses and our Serious Collision Investigation Team is also looking at CCTV footage," the spokesman said.

"If anyone has information please contact the team on fl_collision_invest@west-midlands.pnn.police.uk or speak to us on Live Chat on our website."

The scene on Saturday morning

Neighbours said there was a history of crashes in the area.

"There have been accidents in the past where they've crashed into our wall, with the wall having been damaged twice, and there have been two other crashes just up the road," a nearby resident who asked to remain anonymous said.

"This road needs slowing down and I don't know what it's going to take.

"I didn't see the crash, but I saw the aftermath and saw where the different cars involved were, with one in pieces in the road and another against a wall up the road.

"I'm just shocked, as are a lot of people around here, because we've always had crashes, but never as bad as this as people had always walked away, and I really feel for the person who died."

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: "We were called to the scene of an RTC on Pelsall Lane in Rushall at 9.09pm on Friday.

"Two crews from Walsall, with 10 firefighters in total, attended the scene and found two vehicles and seven casualties in total, including one fatality."
