Marking 60 years as soulmates

A couple celebrating their diamond wedding today put the secret to a happy married life down to “doing things together”.

John and Doreen Scarratt from Pelsall are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary today with a champagne toast

John and Doreen Scarratt, both aged 81, from Pelsall, became soulmates after their first meeting when they were 16-years-old.

They went on to marry at the now demolished St Matthew’s Church in Wolverhampton on March 4, 1961.

Doreen said: “I went to watch television at my aunt Mary Haycock’s house in Deans Road, Wolverhampton, and there were other children there.

“John said he would walk me home and we have been together ever since.

“I remember my wedding day as a beautiful day with wonderful weather and I wore a tiered wedding dress with beads.”

The couple went on to celebrate their honeymoon at a cousin’s bungalow at Wombourne.

Doreen, worked in a grocery shop, and John as a mechanic at Tractor Spares in Willenhall.

The couple went on to have two daughters and a son. They have five grandsons and one granddaughter.

Doreen said: “The secret to a happy married life is always being together.

“I don’t really think we have ever been apart.”

John joked that he thought the secret was “doing what I am told”.

Now the couple are looking forward to having a champagne toast together at home.

They also plan to have a family celebration at a later date when pandemic restrictions are lifted.
