Two tips reopened in Walsall this morning for the first time in weeks as lockdown restrictions were eased – with one attracting long queues of people wanting to dump their rubbish.

Fryers Road Household Waste Recycling Centre, in Bloxwich, and Merchants Way Centre, in Aldridge, were both open from 8am.

While the Aldridge centre saw a long line of cars build up with people eager to dispose of their rubbish, the Bloxwich tip only saw a small number of vehicles arrive.

Walsall Council has said it will be issuing queue lengths and waiting times as the weekend progresses so residents can check before they head out.

A spokesman said: "Although the first person in the queue at Fryers Road this morning was there at around 5.30am, she had brought a flask and sandwiches and was very cheerful! Turnaround on the site has been very smooth and things have really quietened down (for now at least).

"Merchants Way is a lot busier, with current queuing times being approximately 45 minutes to an hour. So far, everyone who's used the sites today has been very good-natured. Thank you all for your patience and good spirits.

"Just a reminder that if you’re planning to use the sites you will need to verify that you live in the borough by providing at least two forms of identification, including photo identification, such as a drivers licence, and proof of address such as a recent utility bill or current council tax summary.

"We will be sharing regular queue and tip updates here so you can check approx queue lengths and waiting times before you set out, and on site our enforcement officers will be there to guide you and answer any questions."

Walsall is the final Black Country borough to open up its tips again – with Wolverhampton, Dudley, and Sandwell all opening theirs earlier in the week.
