Walsall HSBC taped off by police after windows smashed

A Black Country branch of HSBC has been cordoned off by police after a customer smashed windows and refused to leave this morning.

The bank in Walsall town centre has been taped off since around midday with no members of the public able to enter.

Officers sealed off the branch with police tape after two windows were shattered and another was smashed during an incident at around 9.30am.

A man was arrested at the scene after abusing staff, breaking the windows and refusing to leave, West Midlands Police said.

The bank is on the corner of Bridge Street opposite Walsall Market.

A police spokesman said: "Police were called to a disturbance at the HSBC bank on The Bridge in Walsall just before 9.30am this morning.

"A man was seen being verbally abusive to staff, before smashing a window and refusing to leave.

"He has been arrested and taken to hospital with minor injuries, before being taken to police custody."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called by West Midlands Police at 9.27am to reports of concern for a patient’s welfare in HSBC, The Bridge, Walsall, one ambulance attended the scene.

"On arrival we discovered one patient, a man, who was assessed and treated for injuries not believed to be serious before being taken to Walsall Manor Hospital for further treatment.”

HSBC has been approached for comment.

A worker from French Connection sandwich shop nearby said he saw police restrain a man at about 9.30am.

He said: "I was walking past to work when I saw a man smash all the windows.

"I saw police come and restrain someone. Everyone was looking over. Lot of police cars came."
