Asda, in St Lawrence Way, Darlaston, applied to Walsall Council planners for permission to situate the 15 lockers – and a collection point – where the current parent and child spaces are located.

As a result, those spaces will be moved elsewhere on the car park and will see a reduction of six spaces.

Nationally, a number of supermarkets are increasing the service they provide for online customers while some have expanded into partnerships with other companies such as Amazon, enabling shoppers to pick up goods ordered on the web.

In their application, Asda say the Darlaston grocery lockers will be for ‘click and collect’ customers who order online and then pick up from the store.

In the design and access statement agents GPS said: “The site is currently used as parent and child car parking spaces within an Asda car park.

“Grocery collection lockers are proposed to be installed. The parent and child spaces will be relocated closer to the store entrance. The proposal will reduce the number of parking spaces by six.

“The appearance of the car park will not alter apart from the proposed lockers.

“The proposal will not adversely affect the visual impact of the local area. The materials used in the proposal will be in keeping with the current Asda appearance."
