It was the first time Hi-de-Hi! star Mr Holland had visited The Grange Playhouse since it was saved from closure and reopened last year.

About £70,000 was raised – with the help of Mr Holland putting on a one-man show – and the theatre reopened after a year's closure in 2018.

Mr Holland watched the showing of September in the Rain on Wednesday, which will be performed for the last time on Saturday.

"It was a wonderful evening and it's great that it's back up and running," he said.

"Health and safety comes first, and a lot more funds are needed but at least it's back on its feet now.

"I told the crew that the theatre is the jewel in Walsall's crown."

The show opened on May 9.

Director Rod Bissett said: "The audience have absolutely loved it. The set is quite simplistic, but we have lighting tricks which some audience members have said they've never seen before."
