Teenager 'critical but stable' after being hit by ambulance on 999 call

A teenage boy suffered critical injuries after being hit by an ambulance on a 999 call.

The child was airlifted to hospital after the collision on Lichfield Street, in Walsall, on Monday evening.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was working with police to establish the circumstances of the crash.

The collision happened at around 5.35pm at the busy junction near an entrance to Walsall Arboretum.

The ambulance crew immediately provided clinical care to the teenager following the crash while back-up teams were sent to the scene.

A team in the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford was among those to arrive at the roadside and the teenager was assessed and treated before being airlifted to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

On Tuesday afternoon a police spokeswoman said his condition was "critical but stable".

West Midlands Ambulance Service said the crew will receive support following the incident.

A second ambulance was sent to the original emergency call.

A spokeswoman added: "West Midlands Ambulance Service will be working with collision investigators including providing CCTV from the ambulance, to establish exactly what happened.

"Our thoughts are with all those affected by this incident."

Lichfield Road had fully reopened by around 9.30pm.
