Authority chiefs have secured consent to make the alterations to the historic Grade II listed building on Lichfield Street in the town centre.

Work will include fitting a glazed, electronically operated security gate with a reception desk for the public to report to on arrival.

The Council House and Town Hall were built in the early 20th century and has listed building status so approval was needed before alterations could be made.

The application states that the desk and counter will not be “physically secured to the structure of the building”.

While the vast majority of residents and visitors access services at the Civic Centre in Darwall Street, almost all local authority meetings take place at the Council House many of which are open to the public.

The work is part of a wider £1 million refurbishment of the building which also includes full rewiring, new fire alarms and repairs to seating in the council chamber.
