Young students in Walsall have karate chopped their way to the top of a competition.

Students at Gracie Barra WS1 martial arts academy in Walsall have won a number of national championships competitions and have brought home around 60 medals.

Neil Simkin, the head coach, said around 50 students entered the Brazilian jiu-jitsu Junior National Competition, which was held in Wolverhampton last month.

And as well as individual medals, two teams bagged group medals on the day.

He added: "Around 1,400 people competed in the competition over two days on March 30 and 31.

"We had about 60 medals from kids aged four to 17.

"Every student had individual medals and then we also had two team medals.

"The students trained really hard over eight weeks for the competition and they all performed really well.

"The kids are now training for the world championships which will take place in Wolverhampton in July."

Around 200 students attend the martial arts academy.
