The weather outside may have been frightful, but jolly Christmas carol singers at Walsall Arboretum brought out a small crowd of people for its annual Carols in the Bandstand event.

Local band Good Traditions took to the bandstand stage at the arboretum on Saturday to bellow out festive favourites such as Silent Night, Ding Dong Merrily On High, and Once In Royal David's City.

There were also a few pop hits to sing along to, such as Wizzard's I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday.

Park manager Louise Worton said she was very pleased with the turnout, despite the wind and rain.

"We always have loyal supporters," she said. "It's one of our long-standing Christmas traditions here and always makes us feel very festive."

Anyone strolling past the bandstand was offered a free song sheet, and the chance to purchase hot mulled wine and a mince pie.

Ben Gatford, age 33, and his wife Leah, age 32 from Sutton Coldfield just happened across the carols while they were on a walk through the park with children Amelia, eight, and Joseph, five.

Ben said: "We just stumbled across it really - it's made us feel quite festive. The kids are so excited for Christmas. They can't wait for Santa."

Kelly Harding, age 35, from Wednesbury, also joined in with the carols - with husband Richard and their children Jake, nine, and Jessica, three.

She said: "I think it’s great - it's a lovely, traditional Christmas event for the family - mulled wine and mince pies and carols.

"Silent Night has been our favourite song so far. I think it’s a nice mix between traditional and modern carols too."
