Floral tributes left in memory of man killed in Walsall Wood collision
Floral tributes have been laid in memory of a man killed after being hit by a 4x4 close to a pub in a late night crash.
Officers closed the A461 Walsall Wood High Street near Brookland Road to launch an investigation on Saturday.
The road was closed near The Boatman's Rest pub and St John's Church.
The victim, a 28-year-old pedestrian, was struck by a Range Rover at around 12.30am.
He was taken to hospital but died a short time later.
The driver handed himself in to police at around 8am.
He is being held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and was being questioned by police yesterday.
The Range Rover was seized ahead of a forensic investigation.
Flowers have been left tied up outside the pub with the community rocked by the tragedy.
Baldesh Singh, aged 50, and his wife Narinder Kaur, aged 47, own a convenience store across the road from the pub, right where the incident happened.
The pair have ran the shop for 29 years.
Baldesh said: "We came to open the shop at 9am and saw it was all cordoned off, the police wouldn't let us in to open up so we had to wait until around 11.30am.
"We didn't know what had happened, it wasn't nice.
"It's very sad, we want to help anyway we can.
Narinder said: "I was shaking when I saw the scene.
"People in this area know each other, so maybe we know him too, we don't know yet, he probably came into our shop before.
"Nothing like this has happened outside our shop before, it's a shock.
Detective Sergeant Alan Hands from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We're currently in the process of piecing together what happened leading up to the collision; collating and reviewing CCTV footage, speaking to the suspect and taking statements from witnesses.
"It happened near to the Boatman’s Pub, and I would urge anyone who can help us piece together the moments before this young man lost his life, to get in touch as soon as possible."
Enquiries continue and anyone with information is urged to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting log number 82 of 24/11/2018.
