Network Rail has moved to ensure the Wallows Lane foot crossing in Walsall stays closed and has lodged a six-month extension with Walsall Council after it was initially shut for three weeks following the tragedy.

Sarah Athersmith, aged 14, who went to Wood Green Academy in Wednesbury, died after being struck by a train on September 26.

Sarah’s mother Susan released an emotional tribute last week and described her daughter as a ‘beautiful, kind and funny girl’.

She added: “I will never get to see her grow up and fulfil her potential in life.”
