The people's choice exhibition at the New Art Gallery in Walsall opened in March this year and is expected to run until February next year.

The gallery, which was last year under threat due to Walsall Council's perilous financial situation, looked to set up the exhibition to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the establishment of Walsall's public art collection.

For the exhibition they asked the people of Walsall to select their favourite works which they would like to see on display for an extended period of time. Voting took place via the gallery’s collections database and postcards distributed in the gallery.

Stephen Snoddy, the director of the gallery, said: “We’re very excited to be hosting the People’s Choice exhibition as part of the 125th anniversary celebrations.

"We had a wonderful response from people voting for their favourite artworks and the exhibition is proving to be very popular. Hopefully visitors will be able to spot their favourites in the Garman Ryan galleries”.

Visitors to the exhibition between now and February can expect to see a range of works in a variety of media, both historic and contemporary, reflecting the diversity of the gallery’s collecting since 1892.

The gallery's permanent collection boasts more than 3,000 works, from Victorian genre paintings to contemporary installations, which have been collected since the foundation of the original art gallery in Walsall in 1892.
