Weston Road Academy in Stafford was handed the Stafford Borough Council Community Award after almost 1,000 students, staff and parents took part in a 5k around the school.

The school holds the event every year and this year on July 12 it raised more than £7,000.

Laura James, leadership support officer at the school, said: "We won the award and were presented with a certificate and a trophy.

"Tracy Owen organises the Race for Life each year, it's an annual event that we do here at the school.

"All the students, staff and parents come in and do the Race for Life around the grounds.

"We had a JustGiving page and pupils raised money through sponsorship.

"All the children were invited to take part, almost 1,000.

"We are very proud to have won the award, it's quite an achievement for the pupils to be part of something so big and it is a charity which is close to our hearts.

"The pupils and staff are extremely proud to have raised such a massive amount of money.

"We're hoping to raise even more next year and get members of the community involved too."
