The lorry carrying the boat got stuck on the bridge

The bridge in Acton Trussell, near Stafford, was blocked for more than an hour as recovery teams were called in to shift the stricken lorry.

Police were called to close the road while the lorry was safely removed.

Police arrived to close the road

It was believed to have been transporting the boat to a nearby marina when it got into difficulty on the narrow bridge.

But it caused chaos for villagers who were unable to leave Acton Trussell heading towards Stafford by using the bridge and instead had to take long diversions via either the A34 or A449.

A tractor was brought in but had trouble freeing the lorry, before it was eventually removed at around 3pm on Thursday.

A tractor was unsuccessful in its attempts to move the lorry

Resident Robert Whitehouse said: "I do a daily walk around the village and when I got up that end there were lots of cars and lorries stuck in the road.

"There was a tractor trying to get up to the lorry. It was pulling to lorry but it didn't work, the wheels were just spinning round. The police then arrived.

"You couldn't get to Stafford that way. You had to go either up the A34 or A449."

A Staffordshire Police spokeswoman said: "We were called to reports of a 20-tonne boat on the back of a trailer stuck on a bridge. The road was closed at 2.14pm and reopened at 3.06pm."
