Cyclist killed in crash with van at Four Ashes

A cyclist has died after colliding with a van off the busy A449 Stafford Road near Wolverhampton.

The man has yet to be formally identified and his family are being supported by specially trained officers.

The crash happened on Straight Mile at the junction of Vicarage Road in Four Ashes, South Staffordshire, just after 9.50am on Wednesday.

Bystanders attempted CPR to save the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene by ambulance staff.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area as the road is closed while forensic examinations are carried out.

Staffordshire Police attended the scene along with West Midlands Ambulance Service. An air ambulance was also sent.

A spokesman for the police force said: "An investigation into the circumstances of the collision is now under way and witnesses are asked to contact Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 188 of May 31."

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent two ambulances and a aramedic officer to the scene, as well as the air ambulance from RAF Cosford.

A spokesman said: “Crews arrived to find the cyclist, a man, with multiple serious injuries and in cardiac arrest.

“Bystanders had already started CPR on the patient, which ambulance staff took over. They also administered advanced life support but unfortunately, it became apparent that nothing could be done to save the patient and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

“The van driver, a man, was uninjured in the incident.”
