Environment Agency bosses issued the warning after they were alerted to dark substance in Moreton Brook, in Colton, near Rugeley, at around 3pm on Saturday.

A spokesman said: "A dark (black/greyish) substance was spotted in the brook by a member of the public who called the Environment Agency incident hotline number.

"The pollution has now been contained and the source has been identified.

"The incident will continue over the next few days and our next steps are to try and dilute the pollution.

"We would advise the public to keep animals away from the immediate area."
