And Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant came to the attention of millions of TV viewers tonight (thurs) when he featured in a celebrity special show.

Mr Fabricant appeared on Celebrity First Dates in aid of Stand up to Cancer on Channel 4.

The 67-year-old, a Conservative MP since 1992, admitted to being 'nervous' as he strolled into the First Dates restaurant.

However, restaurant owner Fred Sirieix greeted Mr Fabricant by saying: "You don't look nervous –you look like a movie star."

Mr Fabricant's date proved to be 61-year-old fantasy novelist Jan.

Before her arrival, the Lichfield MP explained what he was hoping to get out of his appearance.

He said: "I'm looking to find a nice girl for companionship and a bit of sex maybe."

The date started off well for the pair, who ordered a pina colada (served in a pineapple) which they shared.

However, Jan did not take too kindly to flamboyant Mr Fabricant's joke they were 'sharing each other's saliva' – responding: "That's not a cool thing to say."

Mr Fabricant's luxurious hairdo provided perhaps an unsurprising topic of conversation, with his date saying he was 'wearing Boris Johnson's hair'.

That did not sit too well with the MP, who replied: "No, Boris Johnson wears my hair – I lend it too him."

And there was a tetchy moment between the pair when Jan described Mr Fabricant's hair as a wig.

She said: "The wig is a bit of a giveaway. Why do you feel you need it – get rid of it."

However, Mr Fabricant took offence to her statement, which he described as 'rude' and said: "It's me – my hair is me. And if you like it great, if you don't hard luck."

The MP also addressed his sexuality in the show, saying: "I think most people think I'm gay but when you're an MP if I came out and said what I am, which is probably bisexual, then people would say 'he's greedy, he can't make up his mind'."

After their brief fallout, the pair made up and ended the show on a positive note, saying they are more likely to remain as friends rather than head down a romantic route.
