Firefighters rescuing the cow from the river in Pershall

Fire crews pulled the cow from a river in Pershall near Eccleshall in the early hours of this morning.

A vet was on hand to help and by 2am the cow was rescued and had been reunited with her calf.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service first tweeted saying: "We are currently attempting to rescue a cow from a narrow river in Pershall near Eccleshall.

"Crews from Eccleshall, Newcastle and Cannock with animal and water rescue specialists and a water incident manager in attendance." A later tweet said: "Making steady progress at Pershall rescue of cow from river. She’s half way out and a vet is in attendance to assist."

Then finally: "A successful result and great efforts by all in rescuing the cow from the river at Pershall. Within minutes of the photo she was up and away to rejoin the herd and her calf."
