A highlighter pen was confiscated from a Year 8 pupil - after it was fitted with a blade from a sharpener to become a makeshift weapon.

The tip of the pen was removed and replaced with the small blade and police feared it could have been used to "cause injury".

The adapted highlighter was taken from the pupil, who was aged 12 or 13, from a secondary school in the Cannock area.

PCSO Megan McAndrew said: "This highlighter was confiscated from a student at a local high school, who removed the felt tip nib and replaced it with the blade from a sharpener.

"Although it seems small, it could still be deemed an article which has been adapted for use to cause injury, it obviously comes sharp, and with it's lid on, is easily concealed.

"Please ensure your children know the dangers around bladed articles and being in possession of them."
