Buried pipe prompts bomb scare on Cannock Chase

Police were called to reports of an unexploded bomb in Staffordshire that turned out to be a buried pipe.

The false alarm was raised yesterday afternoon at the Shooting Butts Environmental Education Centre on Penkridge Bank Road near Rugeley.

Bomb disposal experts were dispatched to the scene and the area was evacuated, after what was suspected to be a First World War unexploded bomb, was discovered.

After bomb specialists inspected the object, it was found to have been a buried pipe.

Officers confirmed that the area was made safe and the cordon removed on the same day.

At the time of the incident, police were urging people to stay away from the site while investigations were ongoing.

Penkridge Bank Road, where the incident took place, runs through the centre of Cannock Chase and is close to a number of amenities including Chase Camping and Chase Glamping and Go Ape Cannock.
