Lorry overturns on island in Burntwood - WATCH

Firefighters spent more than seven hours overnight dealing with an overturned lorry in Burntwood.

Crews from Staffordshire Fire Service were initially called to Milestone Way at around 6.40pm on Friday evening after a lorry had overturned on the island.

Around 100 litres of of fuel was spilt on the road as a result of the crash.

Crews worked to prevent it from entering the nearby waterway.

The firefighters from Cannock and Lichfield stations remained at the scene until 2am on Saturday assisting RS Recovery to remove the vehicle from the road.

The road was closed during the operation and the driver of the lorry was taken to hospital.

A spokesman from Staffordshire Fire Service said: "It was a road traffic collision involving one HGV lorry on the island at Milestone Way.

Approximately 100 litres of fuel was spilt on the road, which our crews prevented it from entering the water course.

"The vehicle was recovered from the scene and the driver was taken to hospital.

"Crews from Cannock and Lichfield stations were initially called to the scene at around 6.40pm, before coming away at 7pm.

"They were called back shortly after and stayed there until 2am."

West Midlands Ambulance Service and Staffordshire Police were also in attendance.
