David Edwardson, who was diagnosed with the condition over four years ago and friend Matthew Emsley who's Nan also has the illness, were set to kayak across the English Channel earlier this year in August but had to abandon this due to dangerous weather conditions.

The pair have now set out on two new challenges to raise money for the charity.

On Sunday, November 3, they kayaked from The Hartley Arms Pub in Wheaton Aston heading into Wolverhampton and then finishing at Gailey Canoe Club in Penkridge.

The 25-mile route tested the duo who have been training since November 2018 - with Matthew previously a complete beginner to the sport.

David, 60, a former Express & Star worker aims to raise much needed funds for Parkinson's UK to help with research, development and ongoing support for suffers, carers and also to increase awareness of the disease.

He said: "The kayak from Gailey was a real challenge, when I exert myself that much it takes its toll on my body and i find it hard to walk.

"The support from everyone at was amazing. There were over 20 kayaks in the flotilla supporting us and when we returned to the club they all had streamers and cheered us on, it was very emotional."

The pair have already raised over £18,000 in total for Parkinson's UK through a number of challenges.

His symptoms affect his ability to walk, co-ordinate, speech and affects body movement and dexterity.

David added: "It's Hell. I have some really bad days where my whole body malfunctions and I can't even pick up a toothbrush and I just feel trapped, it's a mental battle as well as physical.

"It's a lot more than just a tremor, I have an internal tick and problems speaking and moving, I've even been accused of being drunk on some occasions.

"Without Matt I wouldn't have been able to do this, because Parkinson's is just so unpredictable. I'm lucky I have some really good friends who help and keep me going."

The second alternative challenge is starting at Poole Harbour in January and will see the brave pair kayaking the coastline across the Bournemouth and the white the Isle of Wight.
