West Midlands Police said officers had used the Section 60 powers in a bid to deter anyone from carrying weapons.

It was introduced at 1pm today and will last until 7pm in the town centre, a spokesman for the force confirmed.

They added: "The order which started at 1pm, and covers West Bromwich town centre, gives us the power to stop and search people we suspect may be involved in violence, without the need to have reasonable grounds.

"The Section 60 is in place after a number of incidents of violence over the last few weeks."
