Man arrested after five-car crash on Newton Road leaves three injured

Four women were injured in a five-car crash which blocked a busy road in West Bromwich for more than a hour.

Newton Road near All Saints Church was closed in both directions.

A woman, believed to be in her 20s, was cut out of her car.

Another woman, believed to be in her 50s, and one woman believed to be in her 70s and, were also injured.

A fourth woman, believed to be in her 30s, suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

West Midlands Police confirmed a 47-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

It is not yet known where the man is from.

Fire crews from West Bromwich and Handsworth fire stations attended the scene alongside paramedics and police.

The crash happened at around 10.20am.

Murray MacGregor, West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said: "We had four calls at the location outside All Saints Church on the junction for All Saints Way and Newton Road.

"Three ambulances and a paramedic officer were sent to the scene.

"A female driver of one car, which suffered front and rear damage, was taken to Sandwell Hospital after firefighters helped remove her from the car.

"Meanwhile, a middle-aged female passenger in a white Fiat, the female driver and an elderly female driver of another car, were also taken to Sandwell Hospital.

"The female driver of the white Fiat was taken to the same hospital as a precaution.

"An off-duty doctor assisted at the scene."

West Midlands Fire Service spokesman Neil Spencer said: "We were called at 10.19am by the Ambulance Service to reports of a serious road traffic collision on Newton Road, West Bromwich.

"We sent two fire engines and two 4X4 Brigade Response Vehicles, with a total of 12 firefighters.

"The collision involved five vehicles across three lanes.

"One woman was trapped by her injuries and the roof to the vehicle was cut to make it easier to reach her.

"Police closed Newton Road in both directions but reopened one carriageway by 11.28am.

"Four vehicles were made safe by firefighters and crews left the scene in the care of the police by 12pm."

Bus diversions were in place on the route as traffic was tailing back to Hollyhedge Road and Forge Lane.

The incident also affected service five that normally travels along Newton Road and All Saints Way.
