Plans to transform a site in Wednesbury which has been vacant for nearly 20 years have been lodged with council chiefs.

A proposal to build three retail units on the ground floor of a new building off Leabrook Road and Willingsworth Road, in Wednesbury.

While six apartments will be built on the first and second floor of the building.

The site has been vacant for nearly 20 years. It comes after an earlier application for the site was refused.

A design and access statement, submitted with the application, states: "The works overall will have little impact on the environment seeking to bring vacant space back into use, making use of an important location in Wednesbury, meeting demand for accommodation and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the site.

"The reduced scheme in scale and massing, effectively two thirds in area of the original proposal, is more sympathetic and meets amenity and parking requirements, balancing commercial and residential needs.

"The scheme should therefore be supported, in line with previously approved development in and around the area."

A decision will be made on the application by Sandwell Council in the coming months.
