Firefighters tackle tyre blaze in Wednesbury

Thick plumes of smoke billowed several feet into the air after tyres were set alight.

Fifteen firefighters were called to tackle the blaze close to the A41 Black Country New Road.

Crews in three fire engines arrived on site at the junction of Dangerfield Lane and Woden Road West.

West Midlands Police was at the scene in Wednesbury to marshal traffic, with the force urging people to stay away from the flames.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Fire Service: "It's an embankment fire consisting of tyres.

"The police were in attendance just for traffic duties.

"Fifteen firefighters attended in total.

"It's heavy smoke logged because it's tyres, it's rubber creating a black plume of smoke."
