Officers appealed for help identifying the woman and her family after her body was found in the Birmingham Canal in Smethwick on Wednesday.

She has now been identified as a woman from Smethwick, who was aged in her 80s. Her family have been informed.

West Midlands Police said on Thursday that the woman's death was still being treated as unexplained and that officers were working to understand how she came to be in the water.

She was found in the canal near Smethwick Junction and Steel Bright Road at around 10am.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We have now identified the woman who was found in the canal off Steel Bright Road in Smethwick yesterday.

"Her family have been informed and our thoughts remain with them at this sad time.

"We are still trying to understand how she came to be in the canal and her death is currently being treated as unexplained.

"We would like to thank everyone for their concern and those who responded with information to our appeal."
