Firefighters battle 50-ton blaze in Smethwick

Fire crews have been battling a blaze involving 50 tons of metal, plastic and a small quantity of lithium batteries in Smethwick.

West Midlands Fire Service sent 20 about firefighters to tackle the blaze at a premises on Rabone Lane at 5.03pm on Tuesday.

Crews remained on site two hours later but the incident had been scaled down, a spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said.

The road was closed off by police as a result with bus passengers using the 54 service by National Express warned of minor delays.

It is not yet clear how the fire started.

The site's owner and security were at the premises alongside fire crews, the spokesman added.
