Bomb disposal teams tackle 'grenade' found in canal

A device believed to be a grenade was found in a canal forcing police to close off a road.

The object was discovered in a stretch of canal near to North Western Road, in Smethwick, which is close to Rolfe Street railway station, at 1.30pm today.

The army’s bomb disposal unit was called to de-activate the device.

Bus services were disrupted as North Western Road was closed off by police.

West Midlands Police said the bomb disposal unit assessed the device and were safely de-activating it.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "North Western Road in Smethwick has been closed after a suspected grenade was discovered in a nearby canal just before 1.30pm this afternoon.

"The bomb disposal unit have assessed the device and it will now be safely de-activated."
