The Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Smethwick has continued celebrations of the 550th anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji by rewarding volunteers and Punjabi school students for their hard work and dedication.

The Gurdwara committee invited all of their Sevadaars (volunteers) to the Sunday Service on December 8 to show appreciation and gratitude for all the voluntary services they provide round the clock.

Those in attendance were presented with a trophy, medal and a Saropa, a Sikh robe of honour which is reserved for someone that has made a great sacrifice and/or achievement.

In total, 450 medals and 200 trophies were presented and committee member Kuldeep Singh Deol was quick to praise the Sevadaars for their service to the Gurdwara.

He said: "The Sevadaars provide these services in such a selfless way, with no expectation of reward or recognition.

"However, the management committee and the Sadh Sangat felt it is only fair to mark 550th celebrations and show appreciation to the Sevadaars in some way.

"These Sevadaars truly are unsung heros and the backbone of the massive operation we run at GNG."

The awards were in recognition of their unconditional dedication to the Gurdwara

Students from the Punjabi school were rewarded on Monday, December 9 for their success with GCSEs and A levels with trophies and certificates at a special presentation at the Gurdwara.

They also received a book about Guru Nanak Dev Ji and were treated to a performance of a two-part drama about the teachings of the founder of the Sikh faith.

Kuldeep Singh Deol said: "Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick would like to thank all the students, parents and guardians, teachers, Sangat and staff for their hard work for the prosperity of the Punjabi School."
