Sandwell Council captured the CCTV footage of the fly-tipping man in Bideford Road, Smethwick, and released it in a bid to deter others.

The man was later fined £400 for fly-tipping after admitting the offence when Sandwell Council Environmental Protection Officers knocked on his door.

Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for public health and protection Councillor Elaine Costigan said: “What is particularly annoying about this case is the fact that this gentleman would be eligible to a free bulky waste collection as he’s over the age of 60.

“We would have arranged to take this mattress away for free – but instead he just dragged it into the street and left it there.

“We don’t tolerate fly-tipping in Sandwell. This is the 121st £400 fine we’ve issued over the past 18 months or so.

“People need to know that we move cameras around our towns to catch people dumping rubbish and if we catch you on video, you will be fined.”

Sandwell Council tweeted: "If you dump rubbish and we catch you, you can expect a big fine."
