It's not even Bonfire Night yet, but one Black Country town has already turned its attention to December 25.

Smethwick switched on their festive lights on Friday night - the first town in the region to do so.

WATCH footage from the switch-on:

The town organised a special Christmas lights switch-on event, with West Bromwich Albion mascot Baggie Bird as special guest. There were also carol singers, stalls, and other family fun.

Mayor of Sandwell Joy Edis was there to press the button and illuminate Smethwick Council House and she was happy to get in the festive spirit early.

She said: "I think its one of the first to turn on its lights.

Debbie Howen, and granddaughter Manisha Nijer, aged 10, both enjoyed the lights

"It was very nice, not too early at all! There was a lovely choir singing carols and quite a few people there.

"There were stalls and face painting too."

A spokesman for Sandwell Council said: “Historically it’s always early in Smethwick to coincide with Bonfire Night and Diwali.”
