Regis Lodge in George Avenue, Blackheath, has stood empty for some time since its closure. It went on the market last year following its closure and had previously been used by Sandwell Council.

After selling for almost £500,000 at auction last year, proposals were then submitted to create 39 flats. The development would see the current building converted and additional storeys added.

Now planners look set to give the scheme to bring the building back into use the nod after officers gave it the thumbs up. A final decision is due to be made on Wednesday.

Blackheath councillor Robert Price said he was uncertain about the development.

He said: "I would rather it was brought into use for the whole community.

"Especially in such a small area I would rather see something like a community centre."
